Supplement
Originally established as a solo moniker in the mid 1990s, Brian Kelly donned the name ‘Supplement’ as an avenue to release demos and drones ‘not quite ready for primetime’ with his band Chicago space rockers Star Phase 23. At times echo and reverb laden guitar sketches, at other times deep space electronics exploration via the cosmotron, and sometimes just straight up blissful and chaotic noise, the Supplement cassette and CD series of that era covered a vast terrain of music and sound.
While Brian stopped officially releasing Supplement material in 2000, he never stopped writing, producing, and recording tracks, including the Bull Valley demo series that he premiered at Mondays at Danny’s in 2005. Around this time he also established the long running monthly experimental DJ series, ‘Just a reminder…’ at Rodan in Chicago, to be followed by the shorter running, yet equally impactful Rotation DJ series with local selector and poet Joel Craig.
In 2013, Brian completed a multi-year study of music-based services as part of his PhD in social work. Currently working as an academic, he is keenly interested in behavioral and physiological benefits of all facets of music, including music appreciation, education, and production. He is widely published on the topic.
With the establishment of Harlem & Irving, Brian is pleased to relaunch the Supplement moniker as a space for solo works. Upcoming projects include Revision (12” vinyl and digital) slated for a winter 2021 release, several EPs of new tracks, and some remastered reissues. The journey continues...
